Laser Hair Removal
Lasers have been used for the removal of unwanted hair by physicians since 1998. Since that time the technology used has dramatically improved and patients, including those with dark skin, are seeing very good and lasting results. Generally laser hair removal is 80% to 90% effective, meaning 90% of hair in the area will likely remain gone. Follow up maintenance treatments may be needed at 6 months to a year following the initial series of treatment to maintain hair removal.

It’s important if you are considering laser hair removal to protect your skin from the sun. Lasers work by targeting the melanin pigment in your hair follicle and if your skin is more tan than normal, this can have an effect on the laser’s ability to properly target the hair. As the hair follicle absorbs the laser light, this will trigger the hair’s natural resting, or telogen, phase.

Hair Removal Journal is a public resource brought to you by The Patient’s Guide. The purpose is to provide patients interested in hair removal a credible resource to research laser hair removal, including costs associated with the procedure, the number of treatments that will be needed, how to choose a doctor, and other frequently asked questions.
