Dr. Mary Louise Lenahan who is a Buffalo native and third generation doctor graduated from medical school in 1979 then completed her residency in dermatology at SUNY at Buffalo. She opened her private practice in Buffalo in 1985 and has been treating patients with care for the past 26 years. She was an attending physician at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and at the Veterans Administration for two years. Dr. Lenahan is also a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a member of the Buffalo-Rochester Dermatology Society. Dr. Lenahan has always prided herself on being an honest, hard working dermatologist whose main concern is her patients well being. As an experienced dermatological surgeon who performs procedures daily; she removes many benign and malignant lesions weekly to persistently hone her skills. Dr. Lenahan’s approach her practice is to be as thorough as possible. Whether it is examining every mole on a patient or meticulously performing cosmetic procedures, patients can be certain that Dr. Lenahan strives for perfection with every patient.
Lasers have been used for the removal of unwanted hair by physicians since 1998. Since that time the technology used has dramatically improved and patients, including those with dark skin, are seeing very good and lasting results. Generally laser hair removal is 80% to 90% effective, meaning 90% of hair in the area will likely remain gone. Follow up maintenance treatments may be needed at 6 months to a year following the initial series of treatment to maintain hair removal.
It’s important if you are considering laser hair removal to protect your skin from the sun. Lasers work by targeting the melanin pigment in your hair follicle and if your skin is more tan than normal, this can have an effect on the laser’s ability to properly target the hair. As the hair follicle absorbs the laser light, this will trigger the hair’s natural resting, or telogen, phase.
